University of Maine

Academic Scholarships, Priority given for the academic scholarships, are awarded by the office of Admission and is given to Early action candidates --application completed by December 15th. Regular candidates will be considered on a funds available basis.
Criteria for Selection:

Eligibility:
  • first-time first year undergraduate student

Top Scholars award: High academic achievement. Award: full tuition up to 30 credits per academic year.
Presidential Distinguished Scholar Award: Maine High School graduates in the top 10% of their class with a minimum combined critical reasoning and mathematical SAT scores of 1250 at time of review.
Presidential Scholar Award: Non-residents who minimally rank in the top 10% of their graduating class have a minimum combined 1250 SAT Award is 10,000 per year--renewable for up to seven semesters.

McKelvey Foundation

McKelvey Foundation-started by Andy McKelvey former CEO of Monster.com is for entrepreneurial students. Scholarships are not given on the basis of academic achievement or financial need. They are based solely on demonstration of entrepreneurial spirit.

Attend a 4 year college or University, private or Public, within the 50 states.
Own and operate a genuine business, non-profits are eligible.
Have at least one employee, even if only part time.

Osher Scholarships

Osher Scholarships

The University of Maine System is offering Osher Scholarships of up to $750 to encourage more Maine people of all ages to give college a try. If you have never completed a college course, an Osher Scholarship will allow you to take a course, including books and required materials, up to $750.
Who's Eligible?
You qualify for an Osher II Scholarship if you:

    • are a Maine resident,

    • are a high school graduate or GED recipient,

    • have never completed a college course,

    • will commit to completing a college course.

What Do Osher Scholarship II Awards Include?
Osher Scholarship II provides an award of up to $750 to be applied toward the following for one developmental, 100, or 200 level course:

    • tuition,

    • required books,

    • all fees associated with the course.

Where Can I Take Courses?
Courses are available at UMS campuses, at a University College Center; University College of Bangor; the Lewiston/Auburn Center; an Interactive Television (ITV) site or via the Internet.

Educators for Maine

Educators for Maine: All applicants must be Maine residents pursuing a career in speech pathology, child development, or certification as a teacher. High school students and GED recipients must be in the top 25% of their class. College students must have a GPA of 3.0 and post-baccalaureate students must be currently enrolled in college, have a B.A. or its equivalent and the most recent GPA must be at least 3.0. Maine Media Women Scholarship: Applicants can be full-time undergraduate or graduate students pursuing studies in journalism, public relations, or advertising. Deadline is April 1.

Carlstrom Family Scholarship

Objective - The objective of the Carlstrom Family Scholarship is to reward and encourage Maine high school seniors preparing for a career in education by providing a grant of financial support during full-time attendance to any accredited college or university.

Awards - One (1) one-time scholarship, valued at $1,000 will be awarded in 2007 to one individual. Future awards will vary in amount, eligibility requirements and rules.

Eligibility - In 2007, students are eligible to compete for the scholarship if they are a graduating senior in any high school in the State of Maine. The student must be accepted in an eligible, full-time course of study in the field of education at an accredited college or university. The awards will be made without regard to financial need.

Selection - Scholarship applications will be reviewed by the Scholarship Award Committee. The 2007 Committee consists of actively employed or retired educators, and/or members of local Maine communities. Applicants will be judged on the quality of their essay and educational merit. The winner will be chosen and announced no later than June 15, 2007. Applications will be judged anonymously.

Rules

  1. The scholarship must be used at an accredited college or university.
  2. The student must start the course of study, at the college or university, in the fall of the same year the scholarship is awarded.
  3. The fund will forward the scholarship stipend, as a lump sum, to the college or university for deposit in the account of the student no later than January 31, 2008.
  4. In cases where the student's studies or admission are delayed or interrupted for any reason, the Carlstrom Fund must be advised immediately, and may result in forfeiture.

Applying - Applications must be received no later than May 15, 2007.

BURGER KING® Scholars awards assist students who work part-time and excel academically. Since 2000, the BURGER KING® Scholars Program has granted more than 11,000 scholarships throughout the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico.Awards of $1,000 each
Eligibility:
  • Maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale or the equivalent.
  • Work part-time an average of 15 hours per week, 40 weeks per year (unless individual circumstances prevents the student's involvement).
  • Demonstrate participation in community service and/or co-curricular activities.
  • Demonstrate financial need.
  • Plan to enroll in an accredited two/or four-year college, university, or vocational/technical school by Fall of the application year.

Bennington Young Writers Awards

Bennington Young Writers awards (submit online) Students in the 10th, 11th, and 12th grades during the current academic year are invited to submit one of the following:

  • Poetry (a group of three poems). Poems must be typed written and attached below.
  • Fiction (a short story or one-act play). Short stories must be typed, double-spaced, and fewer than 1500 words. Scripts must be typed, double-spaced and run no more than 30 minutes (playing time).
  • Non-fiction (a personal or academic essay). Stories and non-fiction must be typed, double-spaced, and less than 1500 words.

Each page must have the author's name clearly printed on it. All entries must be original work and sponsored by a high school teacher. Winning entries will be published on the Bennington College website by April 15th; however, authors retain all other copyrights. We are unable to return submissions. The Al Neuharth Free Spirit Awards

This award recognizes top high school journalism seniors who are free spirits, as well as other free-spirited individuals. This honors Al Neuharth the founder of the Freedom Forum and USA TODAY. One female and one male are selected from each state to recieve a scholarship and the opportunity to attend the conference. Of these students two will be selected to receive a 50,000 college scholarships. The scholarship is 1000. Qualifications

American Lung Assn of ME Golf Privilege Card Scholarship

Supporting Maine's Youth

The American Lung Association of Maine is proud to announce its annual Golf Privilege Card Scholarship honoring Maine High School students who excel on and off the golf course.

These scholarships have been established by ALAME to recognize the golf courses who support the Golf Privilege Card and our outstanding High School Students.

Deadline for submission is April 15th, 2007

Award

Three $500 scholarships are awarded to graduating Maine high school seniors. Scholarships are awarded based on essay question answer, references and review of completed application. All applicants will be notified of their results in mid April. Awards will be paid directly to the education institution upon completion of the first semester.

Criteria

For consideration for the American Lung Association of Maine 2007 Golf Privilege Card Scholarship students must:

  • Be a citizen of the United States and a permanent resident of the State of Maine .
  • Graduate from a Maine high school in spring 2007.
  • Be entering the first year of Post-High School education or training in fall 2007. Applicant must show evidence of acceptance into an accredited college or vocational technical school.
  • Involved in the game of golf either as a player, member of a golf team or employee of a golf course.
  • Pursuing further education in a health education/health promotion, medical or environmental related field.
  • Be a non-tobacco user.
  • File his/her application with the American Lung Association of Maine before April 1, 2007. This must include all necessary paperwork. Incomplete applications will not be considered by the judging committee.

Judging

A committee of Lung Association staff, and volunteers will make the final decisions of awarding scholarships.

Maine Community Foundation Scholarship

Maine Community Foundation Scholarship Funds; visit www.mainecf.org . Each scholarship has it’s own eligibility requirements, review process and application deadline.

There is about 40 + pages of scholarships being offered. On-line is the best way to review the book, but Guidance has 1 copy that can be viewed during study halls.

Scholarships

The A. Leigh Phillips scholarship is for Maine high school seniors with an identified disability(ies) under the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act [IDEA] and Maine Special Education Regulations Chapter 101, who plan to go on to post-secondary education.

The Lou Fontana Scholarship is for undergraduate and graduate students from the University of Maine system who are matriculating toward a degree in Special Education, preferably in the area of Severe Disabilities, but anyone pursuing a degree in Special Education will be considered. Preference may be given to applicants following a non-traditional path to the profession. Think of someone on your staff that may be pursuing a degree in special education.
